Vermilionville’s Folk Art Teen Advisory Council (FATAC)

Application for the 2019-20 School Year

What is FATAC?

FATAC is a diverse group of fifteen 10th-12th grade high school students from the Lafayette area who are chosen to participate in, create, promote and facilitate teen folk art opportunities.  You do not need to be an artist to apply.

  What will FATAC do?

Observe artists at work; apply skills and knowledge to create art projects

Visit art and cultural organizations; learn about arts related occupations

Experience, create and host teen events and activities Volunteer for cultural art events

Work with Vermilionville staff to create marketing materials to promote FATAC programs

Spread the word about FATAC events by distributing flyers, participating in special events, communicating with peers and sharing on social media

Collaborate with peers and other cultural institutions Be empowered to represent teens for programs at Vermilionville.

  How much time do I have to commit?

Participate in a weeklong summer program focusing on team building, event planning and exploring folk arts. (Last full week of July, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Meet once a week during the school year (Most Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m.)

Donate 6 hours of volunteer service for a cultural event hosted by Vermilionville or one of our partner organizations. (These opportunities typically take place on a weekend and do not include the teen event)

Volunteer for 2 teen events created by FATAC, to be offered during the school year.

  What is the cost to participate?

This program is FREE, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

  What do I get out of the experience? (All of the following are great for resumes & college applications)

Develop team building and collaboration skills with a diverse group of teens from throughout the community. Leadership training and opportunities

Volunteer & community service opportunities

Event planning and promotion skills

Enhanced understanding of folk arts

Behind the scenes and specialized opportunities at art and cultural institutions in our community

This sounds AMAZING!  How do I apply?

Check your schedule AND check with your parent(s)/guardian(s) to be sure you can fulfill the time and participation commitment outlined above. If selected, you will need their permission to participate.  They will also need to fill out and sign an Acknowledgement, Consent & Release form and a Medical Information & Emergency Contact form if you are accepted into the council. Fill out the attached application and press submit NO LATER THAN June 15th at 4 p.m.

Check your email regularly for confirmation that your application was received and to see if you are selected as a FATAC participant (You will be notified no later than the end of June of your council status).

  *FOLK ART is an expression of the world’s traditional cultures. FOLK ART is rooted in traditions that come from community and culture 

Is of, by, and for the people; all people, inclusive of class, status, culture, community, ethnicity, gender, and religion May include intangible forms of expressive culture like dance, song, poetry, and foodways

May be decorative or utilitarian

May be used every day or reserved for high ceremonies Is handmade; it may include handmade elements, as well as new, synthetic, or recycled components

May be made for use within a community of practice or it may be produced for sale as a form of income and empowerment

May be learned formally or informally; folk art may also be self-taught

Is traditional; it reflects shared cultural aesthetics and social issues. It is recognized that, as traditions are dynamic, traditional folk art may change over time and may include innovations in tradition.

Canoe and Kayak Rentals allow paddlers and adventurers  an opportunity to enjoy the timeless beauty of Bayou Vermilion at their leisure

Vermilionville’s gift shop, La Boutique, offers a unique selection of Cajun, Creole and Native American arts and crafts, as well as literature and music CD’s from the area.

Educate

Education is a main focus at Vermilionville.  We strive to offer an educational and entertaining outing for students referred to as Cultural Excursions.
