Common Ground Residency

Vermilionville

The Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne will be in residence at the Native American Common Ground at Vermilionville Saturday, July 30, 2022. This organization was formed by the descendants of the Coco Tribe that inhabited the Prairie Maronne and Bayou Tortue area of St. Martin Parish and Lafayette Parish, living on the border of the two parishes which was called Attakapas in the 1800s. They are a Tribe of Lipan Apache Indians called Canneci (Kansi/Kaneechee) which means (Tall Sticks/Poles in a row standing or Red Mud) Tinne means(People). Coco Tribe comes from the original name given to the Tribe in the 1800s by the Planter Elite, due to them calling the Chief at the time by the name of Coco, which in French is translated as Handsome Man. The Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne, Inc. has persevered and is resilient in its culture, language, and traditions. They will be demonstrating various aspects of their culture during this daylong event.

Our monthly French Table is now the Second Saturday of each month starting at 9 a.m. Come and grab your place at the table to hear and speak some of Acadiana’s French language! This French Table is FREE to everyone and is for all levels and dialects of French speakers. No matter your proficiency, Vermilionville’s French Table is a great place to improve your understanding and speaking of French! The vocabulary has a new theme each month, so you will always learn something new with us. Come out and experience Louisiana French with us!

Family Francophone Day

Parlez-vous Français? Even if you answer 'un peu', you'll have fun at our Family Francophone Day! There'll be great opportunities for your family to practice your French, expand your vocabulaire, and immerse yourself in everything French. We'll show French films, play Pétanque and other jeux Français. There will be French tours of the village, extended French Tables (including Pictionary in French!) and more! Enjoy cooking demonstrations and craft sessions in French.

Acadiana Brew HaHa

Come on in for Acadiana Brew Haha, an event that is all about the history and culture of beer and brewing in Louisiana! We've got so many great beers coming from right here at home, including several new breweries that have just opened in the past few years. Acadiana Brew Haha is designed to give you a taste of what's brewing right here at home, and meet some of the people that make the magic happen. Acadiana Brew Haha includes our region's craft, micro, nano, and homebrewers, and you to see what's on tap in Louisiana! All ticket-holders will receive this year's official souvenir mug, to handle your tastings all day! And of course, you'll want to make your preferences known, so each guest will have a ticket to vote for the coveted People's Choice award. Courir de Mardi Gras

Vermilionville

Come out to Vermilionville to experience a traditional Mardi Gras run Sunday, February 4, 2024. The whole family can participate in this interactive event where the Basile Mardi Gras Association shares in the medieval tradition of the Courir de Mardi Gras. Disguised revelers, led by Le Capitaine and singing La Chanson de Mardi Gras will make their way through the historic village begging for the ingredients to make a gumbo. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a screening of Pat Mire's iconic Mardi Gras documentary, "Dance for a Chicken," which reveals the secrets and history of the rural Mardi Gras run or Courir. At 11 AM, musician Kevin Rees will demonstrate the use of the "Chanson de Mardi Gras," with the attendees. At 11:30 AM, the Basile Association will begin run through the historic village and will end with the famous chicken chase for children. After the "run", grab a delicious lunch at Vermilionville's restaurant, then join us in the dancehall for live music from the Pine Leaf Boys, 1-4 PM.
