Vermilionville’s Painting Class Series: Painting with History!

Vermilionville invites you to come paint with us!  Anyone can participate in our new painting class series on Saturday, October 16th from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  Registration is required and includes all art supplies as well as mimosas and strawberry infused water.  You also have the option to add a delicious lunch with bayou chicken caesar wrap, pasta salad, cookie, and lemonade. This class is Halloween-themed. You will learn to paint Vermilionville's oldest historic house, Maison Broussard.  Historical information and fun facts about the Maison Broussard and Halloween will be shared with the group as we paint. Les Vues Free Film Series: Sam and Mattie Make a Zombie Movie

Our Les Vues Documentary Film Series is held on the last Monday of each month. The event is curated by filmmakers, artists, documentarians, and historians from across Louisiana. Screened films range from documentaries to animations focusing on various aspects of culture, history, or the environment. Each screening is followed by a discussion between the audience and the filmmaker or regional experts. Just in time for Halloween, we'll be screening "Sam and Mattie Make a Zombie Movie" -a perfect fit for the spooky season! Sam and Mattie, two badass best friends with Down syndrome, rally the entire town of Providence RI to help them storyboard, script, produce, cast, and star in their own dream movie: 'Spring Break Zombie Massacre.' This documentary follows them along the process of writing, directing, producing, and performing as part of their (extremely violent) dream film! This 10+ year adventure shatters disability stereotypes, champions the independent spirit, features over 70 gallons of fake blood, and culminates in the ultimate payoff: presenting "SPRING BREAK ZOMBIE MASSACRE" to the public for the first time. Vermilionville Painting Class Series

Créole Culture Day (with Schedule)

The public can enjoy a FREE FESTIVAL at Vermilionville for the 20th annual Creole Culture Celebration on Sunday, June 12, 2022 from 10AM - 5PM.  We'll celebrate with live music, cooking demonstrations, juré performances, storytelling, kids’ crafts, art, museum, and photography exhibits, Zydeco dance lessons, genealogy experts, traiteur garden tours, documentaries, and much more! Every year, Vermilionville celebrates the cultures of Acadiana that contributed so much to our unique folklife. Come to Vermilionville June 12 for our Creole Culture Day event!  On this day we recognize and honor our region’s Creole heritage. So much of our food, traditions, and music comes to our region from the Creole culture, and on this day we demonstrate and celebrate its many contributions to our contemporary folklife. With our partners at C.R.E.O.L.E. Les Mains Guidées — Dìa de los Muertos Doll Workshop

Les Mains Guidées returns, with a fabulous "VoodooHoodoo" Doll workshop from artist extraordinaire, Kate Ferry. Come make your own Dìa de los Muertos doll (La Calavera Catrina) and learn the story of these dolls, prominent in Mexican culture as part of a multi-day celebration of friends and family who have died. All materials and supplies will be furnished to fashion a colorful work of art for you and your family to enjoy. Workshop attendees age 14 and up!

Créole Culture Day (With Schedule & Map)

The public can enjoy a FREE FESTIVAL at Vermilionville for the 21st annual Créole Culture Celebration on Sunday, June 11, 2023 from 10AM - 5PM.  We'll celebrate with live music from Herb Green Drummers, Cedryl Ballou & the Zydeco Trendsetters, and Donna Angelle and the Zydeco Posse. There will be cooking demonstrations by Sweet Envie, our own Ms. Deloris and a wine-making demonstration with Mr. Paul Cluse. Louisiana Poet Laureate Johnathan Mayers will share his writing, and Joe Hall will speak about the history, changes and traditions of Creole & Zydeco music. Also, enjoy juré performances, storytelling, kids’ crafts, art from Erica Melancon Fox, museum, and photography exhibits, Zydeco dance lessons, genealogy experts, traiteur garden tours, documentaries, and much more! Another highlight will be the presentation of the Richard J. Catalon Creole Heritage award to a distinguished advocate and supporter of the Créole culture. Les Mains Guidées: Wax Flower Couronne

As part of its mission for the preservation of traditional trades and folkcrafts, Vermilionville continues to host monthly workshops allowing our community to learn a craft from the Acadian, Creole and Native American traditions. Topics range from woodcarving to foodways (and many things in between). For the November Les Mains Guidées, Ivy Lemieux - one of our highly experienced craft artisans - will share the methods used for designing and building a wax flower couronne, traditionally used for the decorating of graves for All Saints Day. Guests will learn to form the delicate flowers from paper and wire, how to dip them to preserve the shape, and how to bring these together to form the traditional wreath. During this workshop, Ivy will also share some of the other elements of mourning and All Saints traditions in history. FREE Native American Culture Day

Vermilionville

Native American Culture Day is slated for Saturday, November 18, 2023, 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It’s a FREE festival with family-friendly events, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and much more. Tribal groups who will participate include: Louisiana Attakapas Eagle Tribe, Avogel Tribe of Louisiana, Atakapas-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana, Jean Charles Choctaw Nation, Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana, The Houma Nation and the Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne. The day will begin at 10 AM. Opening ceremony at 10:30 AM by the Atakapa-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana. Throughout the day, there will be dancing and drumming, music demonstrations, cultural and craft displays, storytelling, tomahawk throwing, crafts for the family, and more. Old Time Winter Traditions

The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past as Vermilionville’s historic village brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. Visitors young and old are invited to sing Christmas carols, listen to storytelling, decorate cookies, make bousillage ornaments, view the decorations in the village, vote for their People's Choice in the Gingerbread House Contest thru December 16th and much more. Vermilionville’s artisans will be on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. We will also have animal feed for sale, so that guests can enjoy feeding our Provence donkey and three Gulf Coast Native sheep. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering a full menu of Cajun and Creole favorites. Vermilionville is closed to the public on Monday, but is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM – 4 PM.
