Healing Traditions of Acadiana — The Cajun Healer: Revival and Renewal with Colby Hébert

Join us Saturday, June 17 at 11 AM for this edition of Healing Traditions in Acadiana, with Colby Hébert. This presentation is free to the public. New Iberia native and generational Traiteur since the age of 11, Colby Hébert has always had a deep pride and passion for his Louisiana roots. Since 2016, he has used his custom hat business “The Cajun Hatter” as an avenue to express and preserve elements of Cajun and Creole culture. Currently, he has shifted his preservation efforts toward the healing tradition of which he has long been a part. In his talk “The Cajun Healer: Revival and Renewal” Hébert will share his perspectives on how we can honor tradition while embracing the changes necessary to sustain it.

Acadian Culture Day 2023

The community is invited to join the Bayou Vermilion District’s Vermilionville to celebrate our annual Acadian Culture Day on Sunday, August 13th from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Join us for a family-friendly day of live music, great food, art, cooking, storytelling, spinning and weaving, arts and crafts, open hearth cooking and other demonstrations. Boat Parade & Bayou Fest

Vermilionville

Save the date for one of the best days on the bayou all year ’round! Gather your friends, your canoe, your cooler, your fiddle, your best costumes, your dog, whatever, and get ready to join us for a day to celebrate the Bayou Vermilion! This is going to be a great time on the water, and we want you to come a be a part of it. The parade will set sail at 11:30 AM from the dock at Vermilionville, and wind all along the bayou to Southside Park. We'll have music all the way down the bayou from the New Natives Brass Band, and of course costume, shore party and boat decorating contests! At the park, we’ll have food and drinks, games, and music! Jumpin' Jax will have a giant Connect Four game, as well as a fun jump, plus cornhole championship, pétanque and more!! Ask for Ashley will be playing 3-6 PM. Want to paddle but have no boat? The BVD has got you covered. We’ve got canoes and kayaks available to help you get in the water and experience our own Bayou Vermilion. Registration and rentals available below! Les Mains Guidées: Wax Flower Couronne

As part of its mission for the preservation of traditional trades and folkcrafts, Vermilionville continues to host monthly workshops allowing our community to learn a craft from the Acadian, Creole and Native American traditions. Topics range from woodcarving to foodways (and many things in between). For the November Les Mains Guidées, Ivy Lemieux - one of our highly experienced craft artisans - will share the methods used for designing and building a wax flower couronne, traditionally used for the decorating of graves for All Saints Day. Guests will learn to form the delicate flowers from paper and wire, how to dip them to preserve the shape, and how to bring these together to form the traditional wreath. During this workshop, Ivy will also share some of the other elements of mourning and All Saints traditions in history. You can register below and purchase tickets for $30, all needed materials and supplies included!

FREE Native American Culture Day

Vermilionville

Native American Culture Day is slated for Saturday, November 18, 2023, 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It’s a FREE festival with family-friendly events, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and much more. Tribal groups who will participate include: Louisiana Attakapas Eagle Tribe, Avogel Tribe of Louisiana, Atakapas-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana, Jean Charles Choctaw Nation, Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana, The Houma Nation and the Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne. The day will begin at 10 AM. Opening ceremony at 10:30 AM by the Atakapa-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana. Throughout the day, there will be dancing and drumming, music demonstrations, cultural and craft displays, storytelling, tomahawk throwing, crafts for the family, and more. Old Time Winter Traditions

The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past as Vermilionville’s historic village brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. Visitors young and old are invited to sing Christmas carols, listen to storytelling, decorate cookies, make bousillage ornaments, view the decorations in the village, vote for their People's Choice in the Gingerbread House Contest thru December 16th and much more. Vermilionville’s artisans will be on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. We will also have animal feed for sale, so that guests can enjoy feeding our Provence donkey and three Gulf Coast Native sheep. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering Cajun and Creole favorite plate lunches as well as a full menu of other items. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering a full menu of Cajun and Creole favorites. Vermilionville is closed to the public on Monday, but is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM – 4 PM.

Courir de Mardi Gras

Vermilionville

Come out to Vermilionville to experience a traditional Mardi Gras run Sunday, February 4, 2024. The whole family can participate in this interactive event where the Basile Mardi Gras Association shares in the medieval tradition of the Courir de Mardi Gras. Disguised revelers, led by Le Capitaine and singing La Chanson de Mardi Gras will make their way through the historic village begging for the ingredients to make a gumbo. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a screening of Pat Mire's iconic Mardi Gras documentary, "Dance for a Chicken," which reveals the secrets and history of the rural Mardi Gras run or Courir. At 11 AM, musician Kevin Rees will demonstrate the use of the "Chanson de Mardi Gras," with the attendees. At 11:30 AM, the Basile Association will begin run through the historic village and will end with the famous chicken chase for children. After the "run", grab a delicious lunch at Vermilionville's restaurant, then join us in the dancehall for live music from the Pine Leaf Boys, 1-4 PM.
