  • FREE Native American Culture Day

    Bayou Vermilion 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, United States

    NACD24 Native American Culture Day is slated for Saturday, November 16, 2024, 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It’s a FREE festival with family-friendly events, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and much more. Tribal groups who will participate include: Louisiana Attakapas Eagle Tribe, Atakapa-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana, the United Houma Nation, the Canneci Tinne Choctaw Tribe, the Avogel Tribe of Louisiana, the Jena Band of Choctaw and the Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana. Throughout the day, there will be dancing and drumming, music demonstrations, cultural and craft displays, storytelling, tomahawk throwing, crafts for the family, and more.     Old Time Winter Family Day

    Bayou Vermilion 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, United States

    December 14th will mark our Old Time Winter Family Day, with Vermilionville’s artisans on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open-hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. Admission to this family event is just $5, for age 2 and up. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering a tasty buffet of Cajun and Creole favorites. Vermilionville is closed to the public on Monday, but is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM – 4 PM.

  • Beginning Birding with Brady

    Bayou Vermilion District presents Beginning Birding with Brady, February 15 at 10 AM. Our resident birder Brady McKellar will lead this session, designed to introduce interested people to birding. (No experience necessary!) Learn about the Great Backyard Bird Count, the basics of bird identification, apps that are helpful for bird identification and more.There will be a birding walk from Vermilionville to Beaver Park and back, where you may see Eastern Bluebirds, Crows, Northern Cardinals, Chickadees, Redwing Blackbirds, Great Egrets, Anhingas and more species in our area.Please bring your binoculars if you have them, (BVD will have a few extras to share) wear comfy shoes, sunscreen and a hat if you'd like. The session is $10, which includes a self-guided tour of our historic village.

    Courir de Mardi Gras

    Come out to Vermilionville to experience a traditional Mardi Gras run Sunday, February 23, 2025. The whole family can participate in this interactive event where the Basile Mardi Gras Association shares in the medieval tradition of the Courir de Mardi Gras. Disguised revelers, led by Le Capitaine and singing La Chanson de Mardi Gras will make their way through the historic village begging for the ingredients to make a gumbo. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation by Dr. Barry Jean Ancelet on the origins and history of the Courir.  At 11 AM, musician Kevin Rees will demonstrate the use of the "Chanson de Mardi Gras," with the attendees. At 11:30 AM, the Basile Association will begin run through the historic village and will end with the famous chicken chase for children. After the "run", grab a delicious lunch at Vermilionville's restaurant, then join us in the dancehall for live music from the Pine Leaf Boys, 1-4 PM.
