Come take a tour on the Cocodrie 2, Bayou Vermilion District's flat bottom boat. Learn all about the history, geology and environment of the Vermilion River. See the sights, flora and fauna (who knows, and a gator or two!) Spend an hour in the morning breezes with our boat captain, Mike Fowler, and Ivy Broussard as your guides, September 19, 9:30 AM. You will receive an email once we've received payment, requesting additional information. Once the additional information is received, you will receive confirmation of booking. If we fill up 9:30 AM spots, we will open an 11 AM tour. ALSO, if you're looking for something else cool to do after your boat tour, you can buy tickets for a self-guided tour of our historic village here, as well. After our next Parler et Jouer French Table, we're offering a Guided Tour of our historic village in French -- a further opportunity for French practice -- we'll also offer English translations for Francophile neophytes! The tour starts at 10 AM, and tickets are $15 Adults 18+, $13 Seniors, $11 Students, $5 Children under 5. Tickets available below!
Vermilionville's weekly Cajun Jam Saturday afternoons 1-3 PM is led by some of the area’s finest musicians. The free jam is held in the Performance Center of Vermilionville and is open to all skill levels-beginner to professional. Admission is free but does not include entry to the park. Save the date for one of the best days on the bayou all year ’round! Gather your friends, your canoe, your cooler, your fiddle, your best costumes, your dog, whatever, and get ready to join us for a day to celebrate the Bayou Vermilion! This is going to be a great time on the water, and we want you to come a be a part of it. The parade will set sail at 11:30 AM from the dock at Vermilionville, and wind all along the bayou to Southside Park. We'll have music all the way down the bayou, and of course costume, shore party and boat decorating contests! A shorter paddle is also possible, ending at Camellia. Even if you stop paddling at Camellia, we encourage you to head down to Southside Park for Bayou Fest! At the park, we’ll have food and drinks, games, and music! Want to paddle but have no boat? Homeschoolers -- Join us for a fun introduction to the Cajun Waltz! Learn the simple steps, enjoy the music, and experience a fun part of the Cajun culture together with other homeschooling friends! Ages 7+ for dance lessons, younger siblings cannot participate in dance lessons but are welcome to spend time in the village. ALL children must have a chaperone with them whether in the village or at dance lessons.
As part of its mission for the preservation of traditional trades and folkcrafts, Vermilionville continues to host monthly workshops allowing our community to learn a craft from the Acadian, Creole and Native American traditions. Topics range from woodcarving to foodways (and many things in between). For the October Les Mains Guidées, Ivy Broussard - one of our highly experienced craft artisans - will share the methods used for designing and building a wax flower couronne, traditionally used for the decorating of graves for All Saints Day. Guests will learn to form the delicate flowers from paper and wire, how to dip them to preserve the shape, and how to bring these together to form the traditional wreath. During this workshop, Ivy will also share some of the other elements of mourning and All Saints traditions in history.
