Les Mains Guidées: Native American Finger Weaving

Vermilionville

Bayou Vermilion District and Vermilionville hosts a monthly workshop series that allows you to learn crafts from our master artisans. At the beginning of each month we highlight a different craft from the old Acadian, Creole, and Native American ways of life.  Topics range from woodworking, to textiles, to foodways, and many things in between. Even if you’d simply like to come and watch the class as an observer only, not taking a direct part in the workshop, we’ve got a spot for you!  Reserve your spot now. During June’s workshop, you will learn and work alongside Neka Mire of the Chitimacha tribe. Neka has worked at Vermilionville as a tour guide and interpreted the Native American way of life for our visitors, sharing both fingerweaving and Chitimacha basketry. During the class, she will talk about the history and tradition of finger-weaving as she guides you in creating your own works of art. Spots are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Vermilionville invites you to come paint with us!  Anyone can participate in our new painting class series starting on Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.  Registration is required and includes all art supplies as well as mimosas and strawberry infused water.  You also have the option to add a delicious lunch with bayou chicken caesar wrap, pasta salad, cookie, and lemonade. During this class you will learn to paint a landscape scene of an alligator resting on the bank of the petit bayou.  Fun facts about alligators and our Petit Bayou will be shared with the groups as we paint to educate about the importance alligators play in their ecosystem.  Spots are limited, so make your reservation today! Boo Bayou Family Friendly Halloween Event

Boo Bayou is back!  Join us at Vermilionville for a fun fall festival for the family! There will be plenty to keep your squad busy including old-time games, face painting, and more! We`ll have a coloring station and trick-or-treating throughout our historic village. We'll also be showing some great kid-friendly spooooky films in our Performance Center, where you can pick up a fresh bag of popcorn. In our cooking school, kids can grab bags to decorate their own Halloween treats! In the restaurant, we`ve got a spook-tacular menu lined up to match the spirit of the day including Spooky Spaghetti and Meatballs, Creepy Chicken Tenders, and more! And of course, kids and adults alike are welcome to transform themselves into whomever they would like to be for the event. Make memories with your family and enjoy great photo opportunities at our Fall Photo Station (costumes are encouraged, not mandatory...but there might be an extra piece of candy in it for you!) Les Mains Guidées: Wax Flower Couronne

As part of its mission for the preservation of traditional trades and folkcrafts, Vermilionville continues to host monthly workshops allowing our community to learn a craft from the Acadian, Creole and Native American traditions. Topics range from woodcarving to foodways (and many things in between). For the November Les Mains Guidées, Ivy Lemieux - one of our highly experienced craft artisans - will share the methods used for designing and building a wax flower couronne, traditionally used for the decorating of graves for All Saints Day. Guests will learn to form the delicate flowers from paper and wire, how to dip them to preserve the shape, and how to bring these together to form the traditional wreath. During this workshop, Ivy will also share some of the other elements of mourning and All Saints traditions in history. FREE Native American Culture Day

Vermilionville

Native American Culture Day is slated for Saturday, November 18, 2023, 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It’s a FREE festival with family-friendly events, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and much more. Tribal groups who will participate include: Louisiana Attakapas Eagle Tribe, Avogel Tribe of Louisiana, Atakapas-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana, Jean Charles Choctaw Nation, Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana, The Houma Nation and the Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne. The day will begin at 10 AM. Opening ceremony at 10:30 AM by the Atakapa-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana. Throughout the day, there will be dancing and drumming, music demonstrations, cultural and craft displays, storytelling, tomahawk throwing, crafts for the family, and more. Old Time Winter Traditions

The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past as Vermilionville’s historic village brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. Visitors young and old are invited to sing Christmas carols, listen to storytelling, decorate cookies, make bousillage ornaments, view the decorations in the village, vote for their People's Choice in the Gingerbread House Contest thru December 16th and much more. Vermilionville’s artisans will be on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. We will also have animal feed for sale, so that guests can enjoy feeding our Provence donkey and three Gulf Coast Native sheep. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering a full menu of Cajun and Creole favorites. Vermilionville is closed to the public on Monday, but is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM – 4 PM.
