  • FREE Native American Culture Day

    Bayou Vermilion 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, United States

    Native American Culture Day is slated for Saturday, November 18, 2023, 10 AM – 4 PM at Vermilionville. It’s a FREE festival with family-friendly events, demonstrations, cultural exhibits and much more. Tribal groups who will participate include: Louisiana Attakapas Eagle Tribe, Avogel Tribe of Louisiana, Atakapas-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana, Jean Charles Choctaw Nation, Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana, The Houma Nation and the Coco Tribe of Canneci Tinne. The day will begin at 10 AM. Opening ceremony at 10:30 AM by the Atakapa-Ishak Nation of Southwest Louisiana. Throughout the day, there will be dancing and drumming, music demonstrations, cultural and craft displays, storytelling, tomahawk throwing, crafts for the family, and more.     Old Time Winter Traditions

    The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past as Vermilionville’s historic village brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. Visitors young and old are invited to sing Christmas carols, listen to storytelling, decorate cookies, make bousillage ornaments, view the decorations in the village, vote for their People's Choice in the Gingerbread House Contest thru December 16th and much more. Vermilionville’s artisans will be on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. We will also have animal feed for sale, so that guests can enjoy feeding our Provence donkey and three Gulf Coast Native sheep. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering Cajun and Creole favorite plate lunches as well as a full menu of other items.     December 16th will mark our Old Time Winter Family Day, with Vermilionville’s artisans on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures such as open-hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles, soap, natural decorations, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy, money and small toys. Vermilionville’s restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman, will also be open for regular business hours that day, offering a full menu of Cajun and Creole favorites. Vermilionville is closed to the public on Monday, but is open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM – 4 PM.

Every year, Vermilionville celebrates the cultures of Acadiana that contributed so much to our unique folklife. Come back to Vermilionville in June for the return of our Créole Culture Day event!  On this day we recognize and honor our region’s Créole heritage. So much of our food, traditions, and music comes to our region from the Créole culture, and on this day we both demonstrate and celebrate its many contributions to our contemporary folklife.   • Boo Bayou Family Friendly Halloween Event

    Boo Bayou is back!  Join us at Vermilionville for a fun fall festival for the family! There will be plenty to keep your squad busy including old-time games, magic, and more! We`ll have a coloring station and trick-or-treating throughout our historic village. We'll also be showing some great kid-friendly spooooky films in our Performance Center, where you can pick up a fresh bag of popcorn. In our cooking school, kids can grab bags to decorate their own Halloween treats! In the restaurant, we`ve got a spook-tacular menu lined up to match the spirit of the day. And of course, kids and adults alike are welcome to transform themselves into whomever they would like to be for the event. Make memories with your family and enjoy great photo opportunities at our Fall Photo Station (costumes are encouraged, not mandatory...but there might be an extra piece of candy in it for you!)   • Les Mains Guidées: Wax Flower Couronne

    As part of its mission for the preservation of traditional trades and folkcrafts, Vermilionville continues to host monthly workshops allowing our community to learn a craft from the Acadian, Creole and Native American traditions. Topics range from woodcarving to foodways (and many things in between). For the October Les Mains Guidées, Ivy Broussard - one of our highly experienced craft artisans - will share the methods used for designing and building a wax flower couronne, traditionally used for the decorating of graves for All Saints Day. Guests will learn to form the delicate flowers from paper and wire, how to dip them to preserve the shape, and how to bring these together to form the traditional wreath. During this workshop, Ivy will also share some of the other elements of mourning and All Saints traditions in history. You can register below and purchase tickets for $30, all needed materials and supplies included!
