Bayou Vermilion District presents Beginning Birding with Brady, February 15 at 10 AM. Our resident birder Brady McKellar will lead this session, designed to introduce interested people to birding. (No experience necessary!) Learn about the Great Backyard Bird Count, the basics of bird identification, apps that are helpful for bird identification and more.There will be a birding walk from Vermilionville to Beaver Park and back, where you may see Eastern Bluebirds, Crows, Northern Cardinals, Chickadees, Redwing Blackbirds, Great Egrets, Anhingas and more species in our area.Please bring your binoculars if you have them, (BVD will have a few extras to share) wear comfy shoes, sunscreen and a hat if you'd like. The session is $10, which includes a self-guided tour of our historic village.
Come out to Vermilionville to experience a traditional Mardi Gras run Sunday, February 23, 2025. The whole family can participate in this interactive event where the Basile Mardi Gras Association shares in the medieval tradition of the Courir de Mardi Gras. Disguised revelers, led by Le Capitaine and singing La Chanson de Mardi Gras will make their way through the historic village begging for the ingredients to make a gumbo. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation by Dr. Barry Jean Ancelet on the origins and history of the Courir. At 11 AM, musician Kevin Rees will demonstrate the use of the "Chanson de Mardi Gras," with the attendees. At 11:30 AM, the Basile Association will begin run through the historic village and will end with the famous chicken chase for children. After the "run", grab a delicious lunch at Vermilionville's restaurant, then join us in the dancehall for live music from the Pine Leaf Boys, 1-4 PM. Each week is custom-crafted for each age group and language in order to provide skill-level appropriate demonstrations and hands-on craft opportunities for your camper! Camp will start every morning at 8:45 AM (morning drop-off begins at 8:30 AM) and end at 4 PM. Friday we will finish at 1:30 PM, following the family lunch and end of camp ceremony. We will also provide the campers with breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack from our restaurant, La Cuisine de Maman. This summer camp is designed for children between the ages 5-12. All campers are required to have completed kindergarten or a home-school equivalent. Throughout the week, campers will learn about the many things that make Acadiana so unique!
