SUMMARY:Les Mains Guidees Workshop -- Santons de Provence CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Vermilionville is proud to have Kate Ferry return for another Les Mains Guidées Saturday\, December 2 making Les Santons de Provence\, traditional clay figurines that the Provençal make to place in the Christmas Crèche. This was so much fun last year\, we made Santons of the traditional figures\, but also some familiar Vermilionville characters\, like Louie the Cat and Mr. October\, Brady McKellar. Make plans to come! \nKate Ferry is a well-known area artist\, designer and illustrator who has made a career of doing award-winning work for Louisiana agencies and clients\, while also producing her own works including murals\, paintings and other artworks. \nThe crib is composed of figures called “santons” which formed French villages some centuries ago\, the shepherd\, the drummer\, the village idiot and many others. The first Christmas crib known in France was set up in 1775 in Marseille. Nowadays they are set up around the end of November\, or beginning of December and dismantled after Epiphany when the Three Kings join the other figures. The origin of the word “santon” is the Provencal noun “santoun” which means little saint. Santons are traditionally hand made of clay and painted by artisans\, and you can have that same experience at our workshop. We will be making Santons with Sculpey\, which will then be fired and painted\, and placed in the crèche. \nSome of the figures we will be making: The Newborn Jesus\, Virgin Mary\, Father Joseph\, donkey\, sheep\, Three Kings\, angels\, along with some more familiar Vermilionville figures including The Seamstress/Weaver\, The Tribal Chief\, The Woodcarver\, The Trapper\, The Cook\, The Breadmaker\, The Blacksmith\, The Musicians (Fiddler\, Accordion Player\, Rubboard Player)\, The Basketmaker\, The Quiltmaker\, The Storyteller\, The Boatbuilder\, and more. Each workshop attendee can expect to make and paint at least two or three figurines\, to take home or to leave as part of the Vermilionville crèche over the holidays. \nThe workshop will be held Saturday\, December 2\, 10 AM – 3 PM\, with all supplies and tools provided. Fee $55\, tickets available below. There will be a break from 12 noon-1:30 PM in order to fire the figurines.

SUMMARY:Healing Traditions of Acadiana -- Herbalism & the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Lanier Cordell\, a native of Louisiana\, began studying alternative medicine and the use of medicinal herbs while still in high school and has continued this study for 55 years.. She grew up in Metairie and has lived in a wide variety of growing zones including Nashville\, Tennessee\, Bennington\, Vermont\, Troy\, New York\, Westchester County\, New York\, and south Louisiana.\nHer paternal grandmother introduced her to the wonders of the elder plant and began her several decades journey in the study of medicinal herbs. Lanier is a former Louisiana master gardener\, a past member of The Herb Society of America and a past chair of the Baton Rouge Unit.\nLanier is an accredited public relations professional and has worked in marketing\, public relations and advertising for more than 30 years. She is also a writer and has had feature articles in numerous national publications and is a published author. Her book\, Equinomics: The Secret to Making Money with Your Horse Business was a top seller on Amazon.com for several years.\nShe is an internationally certified yoga therapist and teaches yoga at Miles Perret Cancer Services and The Center for Loss and Transition at Hospice of Acadiana.\nShe lives on a 32-acre horse farm outside of Opelousas\, Louisiana and grows many culinary and medicinal herbs. She is an avid cook and makes almost all of the medicines her family uses. \nHerbalism and the US Civil War –\nExplore the fascinating facts of civil war and the impact of herbal medicine\, politics\, social customs and traditions on the lives of soldiers as well as the eventual outcome of the conflict.\nHollywood presents the period as being rife with brutal approaches consisting primarily of amputations\, but the reality is so much more complex and interesting than that. Which side had the medical care advantage at the start of the war? How was medical care during the war influenced by wars that came before? Where did the drugs come from? Who knew how to use them? What kind of training did battlefield physicians have?\nThis presentation will expand and alter the way you view Civil War medical practices and the use of medicinal herbs from 1861-1865\, their impact on the war’s outcome\, and the surprising impact it continues to have on present day health care.
