So much of our food\, traditions\, and music comes to our region from the Creole culture\, and on this day we both demonstrate and celebrate its many contributions to our contemporary folklife. \nWith our partners at Creole Inc\, and support from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities\, Lafayette Consolidated Government\, the Bayou Vermilion District\, and the Vermilionville Living History Museum Foundation\, this year’s celebration of the Creole culture and history is expanding into a TWO DAY format. With panels and presentations in the mornings\, and music in the afternoons\, this is an event not to be missed.  We’ll have food\, music\, history\, crafts\, dance\, art and many other fascinating parts of the Creole story in our festival area and spread through our historic village.

SUMMARY:Les Mains Guidées:  Native American Finger Weaving
DESCRIPTION:Bayou Vermilion District and Vermilionville hosts a monthly workshop series that allows you to learn crafts from our master artisans. At the beginning of each month we highlight a different craft from the old Acadian\, Creole\, and Native American ways of life.  Topics range from woodworking\, to textiles\, to foodways\, and many things in between. Even if you’d simply like to come and watch the class as an observer only\, not taking a direct part in the workshop\, we’ve got a spot for you!  Reserve your spot now. \nDuring June’s workshop\, you will learn and work alongside Neka Mire of the Chitimacha tribe. Neka has worked at Vermilionville as a tour guide and interpreted the Native American way of life for our visitors\, sharing both fingerweaving and Chitimacha basketry. During the class\, she will talk about the history and tradition of finger-weaving as she guides you in creating your own works of art.\n\nSpots are reserved on a first come\, first serve basis. This class is limited to 12 participants. Cost is $25 per person to cover materials\, all of which participants can take home to continue their craft at the close of the session.
