SUMMARY:Old Time Winter Traditions
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past as Vermilionville’s historic village brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. Visitors young and old are invited to sing Christmas carols\, listen to storytelling\, decorate cookies\, make bousillage ornaments\, view the decorations in the village\, vote for their People’s Choice in the Gingerbread House Contest thru December 16th and much more. Vermilionville’s artisans will be on hand to demonstrate winter traditions of the Acadian\, Creole and Native American cultures such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and making candles\, soap\, natural decorations\, and citrus pomanders. Children will enjoy writing letters to Papa Noël\, and can even meet the French Santa Claus himself\, who was actually a trapper that would deliver presents such as candy\, money and small toys. We will also have animal feed for sale\, so that guests can enjoy feeding our Provence donkey and three Gulf Coast Native sheep. Vermilionville’s restaurant\, La Cuisine de Maman\, will also be open for regular business hours that day\, offering Cajun and Creole favorite plate lunches as well as a full menu of other items. \nVermilionville is closed to the public on Monday\, but is open Tuesday – Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Les Vues November -- Can't Stop the Water
DESCRIPTION:Join us in November for Les Vues\, our FREE Film Series\, as we present Can’t Stop the Water. This documentary tells the story of Isle de Jean Charles\, Louisiana and the Native American community fighting to save its culture as its land washes away. \nFor 170 years\, a tribe of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Indians has occupied Isle de Jean Charles\, an island deep in the Louisiana bayous. They have fished\, hunted\, and lived off the land. Now the land that has sustained them for generations is vanishing before their eyes. Years of gas and oil exploration have ravaged the surrounding marsh\, leaving the island defenseless against the ocean tide that will eventually destroy it. As Chief Albert Naquin desperately looks for a way to bring his tribe together on higher ground\, those that remain on the island cling to the hope that they can stay.
