This documentary tells the story of Isle de Jean Charles\, Louisiana and the Native American community fighting to save its culture as its land washes away. \nFor 170 years\, a tribe of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Indians has occupied Isle de Jean Charles\, an island deep in the Louisiana bayous. They have fished\, hunted\, and lived off the land. Now the land that has sustained them for generations is vanishing before their eyes. Years of gas and oil exploration have ravaged the surrounding marsh\, leaving the island defenseless against the ocean tide that will eventually destroy it. As Chief Albert Naquin desperately looks for a way to bring his tribe together on higher ground\, those that remain on the island cling to the hope that they can stay.

Winner of the Louisiana Filmmaker Award\, Royce Osborn’s All on A Mardi Gras Day tells the story of New Orleans’ black carnival\, from Congo Square to post-Katrina. This award-winning documentary mixes interviews with Big Chiefs\, Zulu Kings and other carnival maskers with amazing archival footage and classic New Orleans music. The free film runs an hour\, and after the film\, Alton “Tiger” Armstrong will speak on his experiences as Big Chief of the Lafayette Mardi Gras Indians.

SUMMARY:French Festival:  A Day En Français!
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 26 Vermilionville will host an all-day event that celebrates the French language and the vibrant cultures that speak it around the world.  Over the course of the day\, guests will experience music in French\, poetry and storytelling in French\, games in French\, French food and drinks\, craft opportunities in French\, French films\, tours of the Vermilionville village in French\, and more!  Admissions are discounted at $5 for adults\, children 4 and under get in free. \nThe event starts at 9am\, so come on and start the day with coffee\, fried bread\, crêpes\, and beignets En Français!  Vermilionville is partnering with organizations and vendors from the community to provide a truly French experience.  Pétanque Lafayette will be in attendance\, and anyone of any skill level is invited to join in a game.  UL Lafayette Special Collections will also attend with examples of Francophone offerings from their holdings.  Nous Foundation\, an independent platform for exchange between Louisiana and the French-speaking world will also be in attendance.  Vermilionville’s Restaurant\, La Cuisine de Maman will open at 11am\, and French-speaking tables will receive a discount. The weekly Cajun Jam will take place at 1pm.  The music jam features some of Louisiana’s finest musicians but is open to all skill levels.  The music jam is sponsored by the Cajun French Music Association. \nCome on out\, do a bit of shopping\, try food from around the world\, and meet a lot of brand-new friends en français!  A Day En Français — Saturday\, March 26 at Vermilionville! \n\n9am – Breakfast Table:  coffee\, fried bread\, crêpes\, beignets\n9am-4pm – Music\, poetry\, storytelling\, games\, food\, drinks\, crafts\, films\, tours\, and more IN FRENCH!\n11am-2pm – Restaurant serves lunch at discounted rate for french-speakers\n1pm-3pm – Cajun French Music Jam\n\nSteve Riley Record Release Party later that night at 7PM. \nCheck back here or on our social media pages for information as it becomes available.
